KU beats West Chester, moves into tie for first place

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — The Kutztown University women's basketball team erased a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat West Chester 67-60 in PSAC East women's basketball Wednesday night.

Katie Dovey (Willow Hill, PA/Fannett-Metal) (jr. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) scored 18 points to lead the Golden Bears (14-4, 4-1), who move into a tie with West Chester atop the standings of the PSAC East at 4-1. 

Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) added 17.

With the win, KU snapped a five-game losing streak vs. West Chester and a 10-game skid at Hollinger Fieldhouse.

Janelle Garber scored 14 points for WCU (12-6, 4-1). Dana Weems added 13 points and 13 boards.

KU never led in the first half, falling behind 30-19 after shooting just 28 percent from the field and hitting 1-of-11 3-point attempts. 

KU trailed by as many as 14 in the second before mounting its comeback. KU went on a 22-6 run to turn a 44-32 deficit into a 54-50 lead with 4:44 to play. Wisemiller scored 10 points in the stretch for the Golden Bears.

The Golden Bears iced the game from the free-throw line, connecting on 11-of-12 from the line after taking the lead. 

KU held West Chester to just 28 percent from the field and 1-of-10 3-pointers in the second half.

The first-place Golden Bears return home on Saturday to host Bloomsburg at 6 p.m. at Keystone Hall.
