SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Kutztown University women's basketball team's comeback came up short as Shippensburg University drained 14 3-pointers to win 71-60 at Heiges Feildhouse Saturday.
Chauntelle Schroeder (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA/Mother Teresa) (jr. Toronto, Ont./Mother Theresa) led four KU scorers in double-digits with 16 points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East contest.
The Golden Bears (13-4, 3-1 PSAC East) cut an 18-point halftime deficit to one point at 50-49, but Shippensburg (9-8, 3-1 PSAC East) nailed five consecutive 3-pointers to extend its lead.
Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) fell short of a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down nine boards.
Vivian Melvin (Chichester, PA/Chichester) (jr. Chichester/Chichester) finished with 15 points and Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) had 14.
Kasey Gardner led Shippensburg with five 3s and 28 points, and Lauren Beckley had four 3s and 20 points. Michelle Metz also had four 3s and 14 points.
The Golden Bears trailed 38-20 at halftime, as Shippensburg hit eight 3-pointers to build a large lead.
Over the final 9:24 of the first half, Melvin was the only point scorer for the Golden Bears with a 3-pointer, a layup and a free throw.
KU will travel to West Chester for a 6 p.m. PSAC East tip-off Wednesday.
