KU suffers first loss, 68-64

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) scored a career-high 22 points, but the Kutztown University women's basketball team was handed its first loss of the season, a 68-64 defeat against Philadelphia University at Keystone Arena Saturday.

Wisemiller, who had 12 of her 22 points in the second half, helped the Golden Bears (7-1) to a 46-42 lead, but the Rams (5-4), led by Jessica Romano — 26 points and 16 rebounds — took a 47-46 lead with 9:06 left.

KU tied it at 50-50 and a free throw by Chauntelle Schroeder (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA/Mother Teresa) (jr. Toronto, Ont./Mother Theresa) made it 51-50, but Amanda Brennan, who scored 16 points for the Rams, hit one of her two 3s with 6:24 left to give Philadelphia University the lead for good.

The Golden Bears were within a bucket for most of the final six minutes, but could not get the score to tie the game.

Brennan made four straight free throws in the final 10 seconds to keep Philadelphia in the lead, as the Rams made 9-of-11 free throws in the final minute.

Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 19 points and had eight rebounds for the Golden Bears. She also had seven assists and two steals. Schroeder had 10 rebounds.

The Golden Bears will return to the court on Dec. 30 when they travel to Chestnut Hill for a 6 p.m. contest.
