Game Preview: KU vs. C.W. Post

KUTZTOWN, PA (October 27, 2009) – The Kutztown University football team visits C.W. Post University in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division road game on Saturday, Oct. 31 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Hickox Stadium. (CLICK HERE FOR GAME NOTES)

The game will be broadcast on WEEU-830 AM based out of Reading beginning at 12:45 p.m. with the pregame show. Fans throughout the world can listen to game at www.kubears.com.

Kutztown (3-6 overall, 1-5 PSAC East) lost a 42-35 double overtime decision to Millersville. It was Kutztown's second consecutive defeat in overtime. Meanwhile, C.W. Post (4-5, 1-4) extended its winning streak to two games by defeating East Stroudsburg, 42-24.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams. Kutztown is 3-0 all-time against the Pioneers.  Kutztown rallied to defeat C.W. Post, 21-14, last season at Kutztown. This matchup features a battle of two players who are tied for the conference lead in sacks in Kutztown junior defensive end Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland, PA/North Schuykill) and C.W. Post's Xavier Brown. They both have 7.5 sacks.

Kutztown generated a season-high 530 yards of offense against Millersville. Redshirt freshman Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) (Abington/Abington) enjoyed a career-high passing effort. He completed 29 of 51 passes for 324 yards and fired four touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Dominick Massey (Abington, PA/Abington) (Abington/Abington) caught two touchdown passes in the final six minutes to help Kutztown overcome a 28-16 deficit. The Golden Bears scored a season-high 19 points in the fourth quarter.

Freshman wide receiver Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) (West Chester/East) caught a team-high seven passes for 53 yards. Senior wide receiver Shane Martin (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) (New Holland/Garden Spot) had five catches for a career-best 82 yards. Freshman running back Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) (Fort Washington/Upper Dublin) was busy as he led the Golden Bears with 63 rushing yards and caught four passes for 49 yards.

Defensively, junior linebacker Joel Irwin (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) (Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan) led KU with 10 tackles. Junior linebacker Keith Massey (Allentown, PA/William Allen) (Allentown/William Allen), junior safety Khalief Evans (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) (Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) and junior safety Jay McKnight (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) (Reading/Conrad Weiser) finished with seven tackles for the Golden Bears.

Kutztown enters the game with the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the PSAC (110.7). The Golden Bears have held four opponents under 100 yards rushing. Irwin leads Kutztown in tackles with 79 and is sixth in the PSAC in tackles per game (8.8). McCormick has developed into an offensive threat for Kutztown. He is fifth in the PSAC in receptions per game (4.67) and 10th in yards per game (57.8). Senior running back Dontay Wilson (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (Stamford, CT/Stamford) is sixth in the PSAC in rushing (69.2).

C.W. Post finished with its second highest point total of the season against East Stroudsburg behind the running of freshman Thomas Beverly, who carried the ball 31 times for a season-high 170 yards. He enters the game needing 82 yards to reach 1,000 for the season. Junior quarterback Eric Anderwkavich  was 15-for-25 for 232 yards. He threw three touchdown passes. On the receiving end was junior Darnal Williams, who made six catches for 66 yards and two touchdown receptions. Junior Andrew Kell caught three passes for 37 yards that included a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Peter Manns was named this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for his stellar defense that helped C.W. Post defeat East Stroudsburg. Manns made 12 tackles, including eight solo stops, two tackles for loss, a sack for a loss of nine yards, and returned an interception for a touchdown. Manns, who leads the Pioneers with 85 tackles, is fourth in the conference in tackles per game.

The Pioneers enter the game leading the PSAC in rushing offense (226.8), total offense (410.4) and passing defense (154.1). Beverly is second in the PSAC in rushing (102.0) and third in all-purpose yards (121.0). Anderwkavich is fourth in the conference in passing efficiency (140.9) and fifth in total offense (234.0). Harris is fourth in the PSAC in receptions per game (5.00) and fifth in yards per game (74.6).  

Both teams close out the 2009 season next week at home. Kutztown hosts Indiana (Pa.) in a game beginning at 1:05 p.m. C.W. Post hosts Lock Haven University in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
