NCAA DIVISION II ATLANTIC REGIONAL GAME 9
West Chester vs. California, Pa (Saturday May 15, 2010)

INTERVIEW WITH WEST CHESTER PITCHER DAVE STIEG
Q: What does it mean to you to pitch the team back to the championship game and have the chance for a trip back to the College World Series?
A: I was just trying to do my best to get the team back there. I know they were going to hit the ball and I was just trying to keep the runs down.

Q: You pitched deep into the game to save the bullpen, how important is that for the team?
A: It’s good to save the pen for the championship game. Pitching is the key, especially for the championship game. We are going to hit tomorrow and have the arms to go too.

INTERVIEW WITH WEST CHESTR HEAD COACH MARK JACKSON
Q: It seems that each game some different is stepping up, what does that say about the group of guys on this team?
A: The lineup is balanced right through the order. A lot of these teams have a couple of great hitters, I feel like we have a lot of really great hitters one through nine. That has been one of our strengths, some one different stepping it up on different days. For some reason in the PSACs our whole team wasn’t hitting. Now, we still aren’t all hitting, but there is enough guys that our swinging it. When we do that is when we get 11 or 12 hits and we score runs and win games, that is more important then our pitching. But Dave [Steig] pitched a great game. He has been waiting for this since he didn’t get to pitch in PSACs, he made the most of it.

Q: How big was Dave Steig’s pitching performance tonight?
A: It was definitely big for us. I don’t know how many pitches he threw for us, just over 100, he was really efficient. It helps the staff for tomorrow.

INTERVIEW WITH CALIFORNIA OUTFIELDER SAM DIMATTEO
Q: It is a tight knit group of guys on this team, how does it feel to go so far in the postseason during your senior year?
A: To come this far in my last year with these guys, especially since our school wasn’t given much credit, you can’t ask for anything more to battle like we did.

Q: The team had to earn its way into the regionals, how does it feel to go out there and prove that the team deserved to be in the tournament?
A: It was our motto that ‘No one really gave us respect,” that fueled us in the postseason. We come out and like to have fun, that is when you play your best.

Q: The team had a never said die attitude all season and the playoffs really showed that. What does that say about this team?
A: It was a good group of kids, they are young and are really going to go far next year. I am just happy to come this far and have such a great career. I’m happy that everything went the way it did, you can’t ask for anything else.

INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH MIKE CONTE
Q: The team always plugs away and are never out of a game, how proud are you of their attitude and effort all season?
A: It was truly an honor to coach the kids that I coach, they are closely knit like a family. They believe in themselves, they weren’t given a lot, but they believe in themselves and they came here without something to prove. I am really proud of them.

Q: Did you feel throughout the season like this was something that the team was capable of?
A: At the midway point I thought maybe our team could do pretty well, then we hit a bit of a slide. We picked it back up at the conference playoffs. We didn’t hit the ball well here in regionals and that’s what did us in.

Q: What is the outlook for the season next year?
A: We have a pretty young team, we lose three tremendous players. You can’t replace human beings, that’s the way it is. But we have good young guys will hopefully com back stronger and they will be hungry next year
