GREENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Summer Davis (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) etched her name atop the Kutztown record books Tuesday afternoon, setting a new career caused turnovers mark while leading No. 15 Kutztown to a dominant 19-6 PSAC quarterfinal victory over No. 22 Seton Hill at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
Davis broke the previous record of 159 held by Courtney O'Neill (2014-17), recording three caused turnovers to reach 160 for her career in one of the Golden Bears' most critical games of the season.
The first five minutes were quiet before No. 15 Kutztown (13-5, 8-4 PSAC East) broke through at 10:49 and never looked back. Senior
Sammy Ruwet (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) opened the scoring and put together arguably her best performance of the year, tallying four goals and three assists to lead the Bears in both categories. Ruwet added her second goal at 8:48 before Kutztown and Seton Hill (10-7, 7-3 PSAC West) traded the next four goals.
Lauren LaMorte (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and
Alexis Plesic (Hanover, Pa./South Western) found the back of the net for the Golden Bears before LaMorte struck again with 1:14 remaining in the first quarter to give Kutztown a 5-2 advantage.
Ruwet picked up where she left off to start the second quarter, followed by a free-position goal from
Madison Wenner (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City). Seton Hill broke up the run at 9:27, but Kutztown responded with four unanswered goals.
Maddie Wagner (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), reigning PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week
Katie Yocum (Hanover, Pa./South Western), LaMorte, and defender
Micaiah Parks (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), who scored her first career goal on a free-position shot, extended the lead. The Griffins managed one more before halftime, but the Golden Bears carried an 11-4 cushion into the break.
Kutztown held Seton Hill to just two goals in the second half, allowing one per quarter. The Bears wasted no time in the third, scoring just 41 seconds in and rattling off five straight goals. Wagner netted two, while Plesic, Yocum, and
Sophie Engelhardt (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) added tallies. The Griffins broke through with 5:27 remaining in the quarter, but Ruwet answered off a feed from senior defender
Rowan Hall (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern), Hall's second assist of her career, to send Kutztown into the fourth with a commanding 17-5 lead.
The final quarter saw just three goals. Yocum completed her hat trick at 13:09, and freshman
Antonia Troilo (Laurel Springs, N.J./Sterling) capped the Golden Bears' scoring at 11:56. Seton Hill added a late consolation goal with 4:05 remaining, but the 19-6 final was already sealed.
Nine different Golden Bears found the back of the net, showcasing the balanced attack that has defined Kutztown's season. In goal, senior
Marisa Bragg (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) anchored the defense with 10 saves on 16 shots for a .625 save percentage, ensuring the Bears' spot in the semifinals.
The victory marked Kutztown's 13th win of the season, tying for the second-most wins in a single season in program history. The triumph also marks the third time in the past four years under head coach
Kristen Nicholson that Kutztown has advanced to the PSAC semifinals.
The Golden Bears will travel to Slippery Rock to face No. 4 East Stroudsburg in the PSAC semifinals on Friday, May 1. Game time is to be determined.
