KUTZTOWN, Pa. – No. 20 Kutztown improved to 2-0 on the season with a 17-5 victory over Frostburg State Wednesday night at Keystone Field, featuring four hat-trick performances and a decisive second-quarter run.
The Golden Bears (2-0) and Bobcats (0-1) traded goals evenly through the first quarter, entering the second frame tied 2-2. Frostburg scored first before
Madison Wenner (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) and
Alexis Plesic (Hanover, Pa./South Western) answered for Kutztown in the back-and-forth opening period.
Kutztown seized control in the second quarter with a seven-goal surge and never looked back, outscoring the Bobcats 15-3 over the final three quarters. Wenner sparked the run with two of her game-high four goals in the frame, while freshman
Antonia Troilo (Laurel Springs, N.J./Sterling) netted both goals of her first career multi-goal performance.
Seven different Golden Bears found the back of the net, with four recording hat tricks.
Katie Yocum (Hanover, Pa./South Western) scored once in each of the second, third, and fourth quarters to complete her hat trick, while
Maddie Wagner (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) tallied all three of her goals in the final 16 minutes. Wagner's first came with one second left in the third quarter off a feed from
Sophie Engelhardt (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley).
Engelhardt recorded her second consecutive hat trick and led all scorers with six points on three goals and three assists. The attacker scored twice in the third quarter, including goals just 14 seconds apart. Her first came on a backward shot off a feed from
Lauren LaMorte (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), then she won the ensuing draw control and scored again. LaMorte finished with three assists to tie the team lead.
Isabella Montuori (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) also scored for Kutztown. Frostburg's five goals came from just two scorers.
The Golden Bears controlled possession, taking 36 shots, winning 16 of 23 draw controls, and collecting 19 ground balls.
Summer Davis (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) led the way with seven draw controls, while
Rowan Hall (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern),
Avery Hershey (Denver, Pa./Cocalico), and Plesic each caused two turnovers. Hershey collected a team-high four ground balls.
PSAC East Co-Defensive Athlete of the Week goalie
Marisa Bragg (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) made eight saves and added two ground balls in cage.
The Golden Bears travel to New York on Saturday, Feb. 28, for their first road game of the season against No. 8 Pace.
