DEPTFORD, N.J. – The 23rd-ranked Kutztown University bowling team sits in fourth place after bowling five baker matches over 900 pins on the first day of the Griffin Baker Classic, hosted by Chestnut Hill College, at Bowlero Deptford on Saturday.
The Golden Bears (26-16 overall) put up a strong outing that placed fourth by total pinfall (4,804) despite winning just one of four contested matches on the day. Its best match, a 1,011-pin showing, came in a bye round, leaving no result for a mark that just five of the tournament's 13 teams reached throughout the day.
The Golden Bears got unlucky, as each of its next three opponents rolled their best games against KU. Third place and No. 15 Monmouth (1051-964), tournament-leading Dominican (N.Y.) (1070-929) and second-place Fairleigh Dickinson (1087-939) each boosted their records, as all three teams had four wins apiece.
The Maroon and Gold finished up the afternoon by topping Holy Family's best mark of 883 with a 961-pin tally from the team of
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic),
Miranda Pielhau (Waretown, N.J./Southern Regional),
Isabella Hopper (Mifflinville, Pa./Berwick),
Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and
Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), a bunch that held strong through four of the day's five contests.
The second day of competition begins tomorrow, Feb. 1, when the Golden Bears compete in five baker matches to determine final standings on the final day of the two-day competition.
