MOUNT JOY, Pa. – With lane conditions favoring nearly every shot for all bowlers, the Kutztown University bowling team took advantage and emerged in fourth place with 5,130 total pins in baker competition on the opening day of the 7th Annual Mount Shootout at Clearview Lanes.
The Golden Bears (38-27 overall) had one of their best showings of the season on Friday, turning in a tournament-best 4-1 mark and defeating No. 21 Delaware State and No. 22 FDU along the way. In a game where the pinfall matters, KU was able to topple quadruple-digit totals in four of their five matches, including their lone loss of the day, which came by a mere 11 pins to Niagara (1023-1012).
The Maroon and Gold opened with a 1056-975 victory over No. 21 Delaware State, using that momentum to defeat Holy Family by nearly 400 pins (1101-719) in their highest output of the day. They outrolled Dominican (1001-871) and No. 22 FDU (960-927) before falling to Niagara.
Head coach Angela Reynolds leaned on a rotation of Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township), Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton), Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York), Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) to produce the high output welcomed by the lanes. The quintet's highest game was a 248 in game four of the Delaware State victory, while the squad managed to roll 200+ pin games in at least two of five games played in each match.
The Golden Bears return to Clearview Lanes to compete in five traditional rounds on Saturday, Feb. 8. They open with a bye round before facing the host team in No. 16 Mount St. Mary's, followed by Bryant, Saint Anselm, and No. 12 Sacred Heart, which leads into a trio of best-of-seven baker rounds determine the final standings on Sunday.
