NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Kutztown University bowling team finished the day in fifth place out of a 13-team field at the Wildcat DII Invitational, putting forth a 4,699 pin effort through five traditional games at the Bowlerama Lanes on Saturday.
The Golden Bears (46-36 overall) opened and closed the day with victories over Molloy (963-859) and Alvernia (956-770), respectively, but got some of the best bowling from each of its other three opponents to put a damper on the day.
Their highest output came in the second match against Emmanuel, as Shelby Wunch's (Easton, Md./Easton) 237 and Chloe Sromovski's (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) 226 led the Maroon and Gold in toppling 1,012 pins against the Lions. The opposing team struck at the right time, recording their highest pinfall of the event and third-highest among all teams on Saturday with a 1,043 pinfall to defeat the Golden Bears.
Kutztown fell to tournament leader Newman (976-869) and host Wilmington (931-899) before closing with the win over the Golden Wolves of Alvernia in the fifth match of the day.
The Golden Bears were led by Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) and Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York), who each posted top-25 scores in the field of 83 bowlers. KU also featured sophomore Brooke Heimbach (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) in all five matches, while Sromovski bowled in the first four contests of the day.
Competition wraps up at the Bowlerama Lanes tomorrow, as the Golden Bears will compete in a trio of best-of-seven baker bracket matches to determine the tournament's placement.
