Golden Bears drop PSAC opener at No. 15 Gannon

ERIE, Pa. -- Kutztown University men's basketball jumped out to an 11-8 lead less than six minutes into Tuesday evening's PSAC crossover contest against Gannon, but the remaining 34 minutes belonged to the 15th-ranked Golden Knights, who ran away for a 106-48 victory at the Highmark Events Center.

Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Maroon and Gold, but was the only Kutztown (2-3, 0-1 PSAC) player in double figures.

Nkoa Abessolo scored eight of Kutztown's first 11 points and Kameron Roberts (Townsend, Del./Middletown) accounted for the other three to lift the visitors to an 11-8 edge just over five minutes in.

Gannon (8-1, 2-0 PSAC) held the Golden Bears scoreless for the next eight minutes and change, turning the three-point deficit into a 17-point lead with a 20-0 run to take control of the game.

Turnovers plagued Kutztown all game long. The Golden Bears committed 48 of them --their most in a game in the digital stats era going back to 1997-98. Gannon turned those giveaways into 53 points.

The Golden Knights more than doubled the number of shot attempts by the Golden Bears, hoisting up 92 on the night, including 45 3-point attempts.

Pace Prosser had a game-high 15 points to pace four Golden Knights in double figures. Lucas Sekasi added 11 points, while Layne Sarver and Mason Kemp each finished with 10. All 14 Gannon players to take the floor scored.

Kutztown shot 38.6% for the game (17-of-44) and were just 2-of-13 from deep. Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) had nine points and Kidd Brizek (Greenville, S.C./Powdersville) totaled seven points and seven rebounds.

Gannon added to its 46-21 halftime lead by outscoring KU 60-27 in the second half. The Golden Knights led by as many as 62 points and their 58-point margin of victory was the most by a KU opponent since Cheyney's 57 (140-83) on Feb. 18, 1970.

Kutztown returns home this weekend to wrap up the 2025 portion of its schedule with a pair of PSAC crossover games at Keystone Arena. The Golden Bears take on Clarion, Saturday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m., before facing Pitt-Johnstown, Sunday, Dec. 21, at 3 p.m.
