SINKING SPRING, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team opened the Golden Bear Invite with a 3-2 record in traditional competition on Saturday, highlighted by a 888-767 win over 23rd-ranked Delaware State in the fourth game of the home tournament at Berks Lanes.
The Golden Bears (8-2 overall) opened with an 836-799 win over Wilmington (Del.), and after setbacks against Holy Family (885-831) and Caldwell (952-894), bounced back with the ranked win over the Hornets and closed the first day with a 130-pin win against Caldwell (826-696).
Senior Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) once again led the way for the Maroon and Gold, holding a 193-pin average across five games, fourth best among all bowlers. Her day-high of 237 came in handy in their win over Delaware State, lifting the team to a 3-0 mark against nationally ranked teams. Her performances in games two (218) and five (193) were both team highs, the latter securing KU's winning record.
Fellow senior Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) had the lone remaining 200 game against Caldwell, while her 181-pin tally led the way in the tournament opener against Wilmington.
Senior Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) and sophomore Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) each started all five team games, while reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week Isabella Hopper (Mifflinville, Pa./Berwick), fellow freshman Ashley Kuster (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) and second-year kegler Miranda Pielhau (Waretown, N.J./Southern Regional) each saw the lanes for the Golden Bears.
Kutztown enters the second day of the tournament in fourth place, as determined by the team's total pinfall of 4,275 through the first five contests. Dominican (N.Y.), Caldwell and Adelphi lead the field of 11 teams.
The Golden Bear Invite resumes tomorrow from Berks Lanes, with the Golden Bears facing off in Baker competition against Dominican (N.Y.), Alvernia, Adelphi and Coppin State. The weekend will conclude with a fifth game that determines final tournament standings.
