Golden Bear women among DII leaders at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's cross country captured a 19th-place finish in Friday's Paul Short Run Brown Race, but were the second-highest finishing NCAA Division II school in a race that featured more than 30 Division I squads.

Maura Lenhart (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) paced the Golden Bears with a 46th-place finish in a season-best 6k time of 22:01.6. The junior has been Kutztown's top finisher in all three races this year after winning the WCU Season Opener, Sept. 5, and the DII/DIII Challenge, Sept. 13.

Redshirt freshman Gabby Keith (Reading, Pa./Exeter) and graduate student Sophia Knerr (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) placed just outside the top 100 in a meet that featured 328 finishers. Keith was 106th in 22:42.3, while Knerr crossed the line in 110th with a time of 22:48.6.

Olivia Solomon (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) took 137th (23:02.0) and Deandra Young (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) was 148th (23:09.8) to round out the scoring finishers for the Golden Bears.

Also representing the Maroon and Gold were Lizzie Brown (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) in 164th (23:19.4), Faith Belote (Easton, Pa./Easton) in 176th (23:29.8), Sage Dunkleberger (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) in 197th (23:39.5), Nina Castellano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) in 202nd (23:42.6) and Jensen Kraft (Nutley, N.J./Saint Mary) in 272nd (24:59.5).

Kutztown (517 points) trailed only East Stroudsburg among DII and PSAC schools. The Warriors were just nine points ahead of KU in 18th (508). Sixteen of the top 17 teams were from Division I, with the University of New Brunswick from Canada in sixth the only non-DI program to break into the top 17. George Washington won the meet with 99 points, 55 ahead of runner-up Iona. Binghamton, Buffalo and Syracuse rounded out the top five.

The Golden Bears will get one more meet to prep for the upcoming PSAC Championships at Edinboro when they travel to West Chester next Saturday, Oct. 11, for the Golden Ram Invitational.
