Soccer’s early tally secures victory over Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team used an eighth-minute goal from junior midfielder Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) to top the 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg Huskies, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division matchup at Steph Pettit Stadium.

The Golden Bears (10-4-1, 8-4-1 PSAC East) found a way to strike early and hold the edge throughout the match, facing a variety of Huskies (9-4-2, 6-4-2 PSAC East) that included eight different substitutes who totaled 240 minutes of playing time off the bench.

Day took the first shot of the night on a feed from freshman midfielder Sierra Hess (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), landing it in the top right corner of the frame for her second goal of the season. The Huntingdon Valley, Pa., native took four shots on the afternoon while placing two on target, turning the attention of opposing goalkeeper Samantha Merklin in her direction.

Kutztown attempted seven of its final 10 shots in a much more high-paced second half, including one on-target shot of a team high four total shots from forward Sarah Bronico (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) in the 77th minute, but it didn't need to add another as its stellar defensive unit stood strong to secure the regular season sweep of Bloomsburg.

Kutztown goaltender Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) collected a pair of saves for her sixth shutout of the 2025 season. The two-time PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week faced nine total shots from the BU attack, two of which were on target.

The Maroon and Gold held an advantage in shots (11-9), shots on goal (5-2) and corners (8-4) in its 10th victory of the season. Both teams saw an uptick in production in the second frame, but Kutztown fended off any late Bloomsburg push for the victory.

Today's matchup was pivotal in the PSAC East standings, a division where the first-place team (West Chester) and the fifth-place team (Bloomsburg) are separated by five points following the conclusion of today's game. KU's victory secures at least a fourth-place finish in conference standings, as Millersville, currently in third, is four points behind the Golden Bears with one game remaining.

The Golden Bears will look to bring this momentum back home to wrap up the regular season, as they will face Shippensburg on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 3 p.m. at Keystone Field.
