Second-half goals lift Golden Bears over Lock Haven

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team faced a strong Lock Haven Bald Eagles defensive unit all afternoon, but managed to get by them for a pair of second-half goals in a 2-0 Senior Day win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division action on Saturday afternoon at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears (8-3, 6-3 PSAC East) won their third straight game and maintain a hold on the top spot in the PSAC East Division on the back of a strong midfield and a pesky defensive backfield, while the offense had its time when it landed a pair of its eight on-target shots in the back of the net against the Bald Eagles (2-6-2, 0-6-2 PSAC East).

Ten minutes into the second period, sophomore Sarah Bronico (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) got free and managed to land her first goal of the season, giving the team a huge momentum turn heading into the remaining 35 minutes. While LHU continued their attacking attempts, Kutztown was able to retaliate and hold steady through it all.

After many late charges by the Golden Bears' offensive unit, forward Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) struck gold in the 88th minute off an assist from senior Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) to put the game out of reach for the visitors. It was the junior's seventh goal of the season, placing her in the top 10 among all conference goal scorers.

Morgan was also credited with nine shots, four of which were on goal, reasserting her spot as a high-volume striker for the Maroon and Gold. Bronico, Emma Gonzalez (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) and Natalie Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) each took a pair of shots on the afternoon.

Lock Haven was held silent against one of its toughest opponents of the year, taking three shots while putting a pair on frame. Goalkeeper Megan Miller stood strong for the Bald Eagles, making five saves in the face of tough pressure from KU.

Keeper Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) came out of this game with her fourth shutout of the year, making just two saves against LHU.

The Bald Eagles were outmatched in shots, 19-3, shots on goal, 8-2, and corners, 10-0, while holding the advantage in saves against Kutztown.

With the win, Kutztown makes it 19 straight over the Bald Eagles, a stretch that goes back to the 2012 season. KU is 24-9-1 lifetime against LHU.

The Golden Bears are back in action at Millersville on Wednesday, Oct. 15, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The team returns to Keystone Field the following Wednesday, Oct. 22, for a matchup against rival West Chester, with kickoff also slated for 7 p.m.
