SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's swim team captured six event victories and established seven PSAC Championships qualifying cut times as it opened its 2024-25 season at Shippensburg on Wednesday night. The Golden Bears came up just short of the dual victory, falling 131-130 to the Raiders.

Junior Annamarie Rodier (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) swept the distance freestyle events while qualifying for PSACs in the 200- and 1000-yard freestyle.

Freshman Kara Damico (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) claimed the 50 free with a PSAC cut time and classmate Phoebe Armes (Somerset, UK/Millfield School) did the same in the 100 free. The rookie duo were also part of Kutztown's (0-1, 0-1 PSAC) winning 200 free relay team.

Sophomore Birta Smaradottir (Mosfellsbær, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) secured the Bears' remaining individual victory in the 100 breaststroke.

Rodier got off to a strong start by establishing PSAC qualifying times in the first two individual events. She swam 11:03.26 to win the 1000 free and followed that up with a 2:01.77 to place runner-up in the 200 free.

Damico, a Brookhaven, Pa., native, led a 1-2 finish for KU in the 50 free with a winning time of 25.32. Frannie Pease-Wingenter (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) was second in 25.58 as both swimmers put forth PSAC qualifying times.

The Golden Bears featured a trio of PSAC qualifiers in the 100 free, where Armes won in 54.94. Damico was third in 55.87 and Ana Soto (Hamburg, N.J./Vernon Township) fourth in 56.02.

Smaradottir won the 100 breast in 1:12.66 as the Maroon and Gold swept the top three spots. Tatum Rothermel (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) was second (1:13.30) and Jade Ware (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) third (1:15.55). Kutztown made it back-to-back 1-2-3 finishes with Rodier winning the 500 free (5:33.00) ahead of Camryn Sedora (Chester, Md./Kent Island) (5:50.84) and Lorelei Grove (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (6:05.44).

Kutztown entered the final event, the 200 free relay, trailing by six points and needing a victory and third-place finish to win the meet. They got 11 crucial points with the event victory from Damico, Armes, Soto and Pease-Wingenter in 1:40.82 but the Raiders top two relays took second and third to combine for six points, allowing the hosts to hold on.
