GREENSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown women's lacrosse is right where it expected to be, playing for a title. KU amassed a little bit of revenge Friday afternoon in taking down Seton Hill 13-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinal round at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
Â
The Maroon and Gold, the second seed out of the East Division, fell to the Griffins (13-5) in the same round last year, but were able to get the better of them this time around. And it started with the defense, which allowed just three second half goals, including only one in the fourth quarter, as they outscored SHU 7-3 in the second half.
Â
The Golden Bears (15-4 overall) have come a long way in the last two seasons, from going 4-13 overall and 1-11 in the conference in 2022, to 15 victories and a 9-3 mark in the PSAC in 2024. The program will be playing in their first conference final since 1984.
Â
Kutztown will be playing in its first PSAC Tournament championship. KU was crowned PSAC champion in 1982 and played in the conference championship game in 1983 and 1984, but the format was just the top two teams record-wise made the final.
Â
Sam Graf (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) once again had a huge hand in the offensive success Friday. The junior finished with a game-high six goals and an assist for seven points.
Lailah ElBouazzaoui (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) tallied three goals and an assist and
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) recorded two goals and an assist.
Lauren Lamorte (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and
Madison Wenner (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) rounded out the scoring with a goal each for KU.
Â
Seton Hill held a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter and then the two teams both scored four goals in the second quarter as the Griffins held a 7-6 advantage at halftime.
Â
Kutztown's defense then stepped up in a big way.
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) finished with nine saves in goal.
Summer Davis (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional),
Emily Christiansen (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury),
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown),
Robin Spector (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) and
Rowan Hall (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern) all contributed to the cause, as KU finished with 16 caused turnovers.
Â
The Golden Bears will play the winner of the top seed out the East, West Chester, or the second seed from the West, Slippery Rock, in the final on Sunday, May 12, at 1 p.m.
