No. 3 Field Hockey earns penalty shootout victory over Mansfield in PSAC quarterfinal

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – No. 3 and third-seeded Kutztown field hockey got a little bit of revenge Monday night and for the second time this season, both at home, won a game via a penalty shootout as KU downed No. 9 and sixth-seeded Mansfield 2-1, winning the shootout 3-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference quarterfinal round matchup at Andre Reed Stadium.

The Golden Bears (14-4 overall) will now advance to the semifinal round and take on the two seed, East Stroudsburg, as part of the final four at Shippensburg University this weekend. KU and ESU will matchup on Friday, Nov. 8, at a time to be determined. The other semifinal will feature the top seed and host Raiders against the fourth seed, Bloomsburg.

Just as they did in their 2-1 upset victory during the regular season three weeks ago, the Mountaineers (10-9) got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Jenna Duke with an assist from Ashtyn Price 9:46 into the contest.

Kutztown did not want a repeat of the last matchup, and, trailing 1-0 in the second quarter, Marlee Fetrow (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) tied the score at 1-1 on a goal at the top of the circle after she took an initial pass from Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) on a penalty corner 5:20 into the second. It was Fetrow's third goal of the season.

The score would remain 1-1 through another 60 minutes of game play and went into a shootout. Both teams had their chances on cage, but both goalies came up big for their teams, with Mia Kepler (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) finishing with a save and even Sarah Gatehouse (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) making a defensive save. Mansfield's August Lewis had 14 saves and kept her team in it throughout.

Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick) and Gonzalez connected on back-to-back attempts and Kepler stopped the Mounties' first three. Following a make in their fourth attempt, Gatehouse sent her team into celebration mode with the conversion.

It was the second straight shootout win in as many tries this season and the fourth win in-a-row for Kutztown.
