Women's bowling storms to second on opening day of Mercyhurst Invitational

ERIE, Pa. -- Backed by all-tournament team performances from Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) and Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial), Kutztown University women's bowling opened its 2024-25 season with four wins in five matches on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Invitational.

Kutztown won four straight games out of the gate, including a 975-905 victory over 12th-ranked Mount St. Mary's, before dropping its finale against Pitt-Bradford. The Golden Bears ended the day second in the team standings with a score of 4,791 and a 191.6 average. They'll head into Sunday's action just 83 pins behind Niagara.

Wunch led three Golden Bears in the 200s with a 226 as KU defeated host Mercyhurst, 993-935, in its opening match. Sromovski posted a 215 and Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) a 211, while Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) added a 190.

The Maroon and Gold were even better against Daemen, surpassing the 1,000-pin threshold in a 1,063-936 victory. Sromovski topped KU with a 236, followed by Hanaway (232), Brenneman (217) and Wunch (199).

Kutztown wasted no time picking up its first ranked win of the year with a 975-905 triumph over No. 12 Mount St. Mary's. Hanaway became the third high scorer for the Bears in three matches with a 223, while Sromovski had a 208.

Sromovski's 203 lifted head coach Angela Reynolds' team to an 877-801 win over William Smith in the Golden Bears' penultimate match. Brenneman added a 192 and Wunch a 183. William Smith entered the season ranked seventh in the NTCA's Division II/III Preseason Poll.

Wunch rolled a career-high 233 but it wasn't enough to take down Pitt-Bradford, as the Bears fell 910-883.

Wunch, a junior from Easton, Md., ranked third among individual bowlers with a score of 1,030 across five matches for a 206.0 average. Sromovski was in close pursuit, placing fourth with a 1,026 (205.2). Hanaway recorded a 973 (194.6) for ninth and Brenneman was 12th at 951 (190.2).

Kutztown will wrap up the Mercyhurst Invitational with four Baker format matches on Sunday. They'll face Wright State, D'Youville, Penn State Behrend and 25th-ranked Niagara beginning at 11 a.m.
