NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team went 1-2 in Baker format play before dropping a pair of best-of-seven bracket matches to finish fourth at the Bud Whitman Memorial, Sunday.
Â
Following the completion of seeding matches, the Golden Bears third out of 15 teams with a score of 7,448 pins (2,673 baker and 4,775 traditional), for a 186.2 average.
Kutztown qualified for the upper tier of the playoff bracket with the chance to compete for the tournament title. Unfortunately, the Bears fell to second-seeded and No. 20 Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening round, 4-1. KU had defeated the Knights earlier in the day, 919-835, in their second Baker match. In the first, KU lost to Dominican (N.Y.) 892-842 before dropping their final qualifier, 972-912, to Wilmington (Del.).
Â
After the best-of-seven loss to FDU, Kutztown once again squared off with Dominican, this time for third place. The Chargers built a 3-0 series lead before the Maroon and Gold stormed back with three straight wins, highlighted by a 201-156 victory in game six. Dominican would prevail in game seven, however, winning by eight pins (165-157) to relegate KU to fourth in the final standings.

Kutztown will host the Golden Bear Invite next weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20, at Berks Lanes in Sinking Spring.
