Volleyball downed at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Kutztown Women's Volleyball may have experienced tired legs Saturday afternoon, having gone to five sets the night before at West Chester. KU was back out on the court a little over 16 hours after the final point last night and was met by a dominant Millersville team, which won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division match in straight sets at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-13 and 25-22 in favor of the Marauders (6-8 overall, 1-2 PSAC East). The Golden Bears (7-8, 0-3) are still searching for their first conference victory, falling just one set and a few points shy Friday night at West Chester.

Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) finished with 11 kills and five digs. Gabriela Fialova (Ledec nad Sazavou, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) tallied eight kills, 12 digs and one block. Julia Post (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) recorded six kills, two blocks and two digs. Cat Farole (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) contributed 22 assists and five digs. Sarah Hess (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) added three kills, two blocks and two assists and Mallory Hoch (Zionsville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) ended up with seven digs.

Millersville was clicking offensively all afternoon and connected on a majority of its hitting, finishing with a .202 hit percentage, whereas Kutztown had a .090 hit percentage.

In the opening set, the Maroon and Gold erased an early 5-3 deficit and scored four straight points to go ahead 7-5. KU led by as many as six points twice, 16-10 and 17-11, but Millersville went on a run and ended the set by scoring 14 of the last 17 points overall. Similarly in the second set, the Golden Bears went on top early, leading 5-3, but the Marauders scored three in-a-row to take back the lead and then went on a 7-1 run to go ahead 13-7 and never looked back. The Marauders jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the third set, but KU answered and took a 9-8 lead on a kill by Post. MU, however, recorded eight of the next nine points to go up 16-10 and then held on from a late KU rally in which the Golden Bears got to within just one (17-16) after a kill by Fialova. Millersville scored the next four and shut down the door late.

Kutztown will now play four consecutive conference matches at home, beginning next weekend as it welcomes Shepherd next Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m., and then hosts Shippensburg the next day at 1 p.m. Both matches are inside Keystone Arena.
