KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Gracie McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown),
Frannie Pease-Wingenter (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) and
Annamarie Rodier (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) combined for 10 wins on the evening as the Kutztown University women's swim team opened its season with a 134-128 loss to PSAC foe Shippensburg Wednesday at the Keystone Natatorium.
The meet was tied at 113 after 12-of-14 events, with the final outcome decided in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle relay. Shippensburg jumped ahead by 11 with a 1-2-4 finish in the 200 IM and though the Bears answered with a win in the 200 free relay from Rodier,
Ana Soto (Hamburg, N.J./Vernon Township),
Trinity Miller (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) and Pease-Wingenter, it wasn't quite enough as the hosts needed a 1-2 finish to flip the result in their favor.
Kutztown (0-1, 0-1 PSAC) went in front early as McKee,
Birta Smaradottir (Mosfellsbær, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland), Soto and Pease-Wingenter captured the 200 medley relay in thrilling fashion, outdueling the Raiders top team by half a second with a winning time of 1:53.29.
Rodier swam a PSAC-qualifying time of 11:03.86 to win the 1000 free and McKee picked up her first individual win of the night in the 50 backstroke (27.43).
A pair of 1-2-3 sweeps from Shippensburg (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) in the 200 free and 100 butterfly put the visitors in front for most of the middle stages of the meet.
Pease-Wingenter won the 50 free in 25.82, besting a PSAC cut (25.83) by the slimmest of margins. McKee looked to be in fine form with a victory in the 100 back in a PSAC time of 59.41. The graduate student from Gilbertsville, Pa., already owns the school record at 56.60 and is a two-time PSAC medalist in the event having taken bronze in 2022 and silver in 2023.
Rodier put down another PSAC time in sweeping the distance free events with a 5:21.92 to claim victory in the 500 free by almost eight seconds over the Raiders' Michelle Kubiak.
McKee closed her night with a win in the 50 fly with a time of 27.12, leading a 1-2 with teammate Soto (29.28).
Alyssa Tomb was the lone multi-event winner for Shippensburg, taking the 100 free (57.63) and 200 IM (2:18.55).
The Golden Bears will have a couple of weeks to prepare for their next competition, a home meet against Cedar Crest on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m.
