KUTZTOWN, Pa. – After playing two games 24 hours before, the Kutztown University baseball team (17-12, 4-5 PSAC East) was unable to overcome an early deficit as it fell to Wilmington (14-11, 6-1 CACC) 15-7 on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at North Campus Field.
The Wildcats got on the Golden Bears' pitching staff early, racking up eight runs in the first two innings. A four-run fourth inning widened the Wilmington lead even further, as the KU offense struggled to keep up in what ended up being a 15-7 defeat. The Wildcats hit six home runs in the game, three of which came in the first two innings.
Despite the loss, the Golden Bear offense had a solid day, lead by the efforts of Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.). The senior second basemen went 3-for-5 with three RBI, which included his third home run of the campaign. Ethan Martini (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) was the other Golden Bear to have a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a double.
Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown), and Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) all had a double each, with Proietto having two RBI. Joey Pettinelli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown), Michael Burns (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman), Brennan Rozich (Oxford, Pa./Oxford), Brian Finn (Warrington, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy), and Cole Regn (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) all had a hit. Rozich also swiped two bags, while Regn had one steal.
It was a bullpen game for both teams, with a combined 11 pitchers seeing the field between the two teams. Jake Skrocki (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) took the loss for KU, while Michael Lennon (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn), Dalton Geiger (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), and Tyler Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) all took the bump for the Golden Bears. Matt Boyko earned the win for Wilmington.
KU has some time to rest before it returns to PSAC East play this weekend against Shepherd. Game one of the series will be on Friday, April 7 at North Campus Field. That nine-inning game will start at 2 p.m. The teams will then meet in West Virginia the following day for a doubleheader starting at noon.
