KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) and sophomore
Lailah ElBouazzaoui (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) etched their names into the top of some program records Wednesday afternoon as Kutztown women's lacrosse blitzed Bloomsburg to the tune of seven unanswered goals to start the game on its way to a 19-6 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division victory at Keystone Field.
Â
Meakim finished with two goals and three assists for five points, setting a new record for points in a season for KU, surpassing the previous mark of 67, set by Sarah Gabriele in 2016 and 2017. She now has 70 on the year. ElBouazzaoui netted seven goals Wednesday, tying the KU record for goals in game with four other Golden Bears in program history. She now has 41 tallies this season, fifth-most in the PSAC.
Â
The Golden Bears (10-3 overall, 7-2 PSAC East) won their third game in-a-row and have now won 10 games thus far this season, the most in a season since 1983 when they also had 10 victories. Wednesday's win tied a season-high in goals scored.
Â
Kutztown jumped all over the Huskies (6-9, 3-6) with seven straight goals to open the game and held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. The teams traded goals the first 4:44 of the second as the Maroon and Gold went on top 8-1.
Â
Bloomsburg went on a little rally the next 2:59, scoring three consecutive goals to pull to within 8-4, but that was the closest they would get the rest of the way as KU netted four in-a-row over the final 6:31 of the quarter to go up 12-4 at halftime, following a
Brynn Axe (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) goal with just 0:03 left.
Sam Graf (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and ElBouazzaoui found the back of the net within the first 6:28 of the third quarter to put the game into the mercy rule as the Golden Bears led by 10 (14-4).
Â
The Kutztown defense, led by senior goalie
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional), kept Bloomsburg in check all game. Blesson, who finished with 12 saves, was joined by defenders
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown),
Robin Spector (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional),
Brooke-Lynn Grim (Abbottstown, Pa./New Oxford),
Sydnie Bisesi (Denton, Md./North Caroline),
Emily Christiansen (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) and
Rowan Hall (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern) in shutting out the Huskies over the course of the first and third quarters, giving their offense a chance to mount a large lead.
Â
Along with Meakim, both Graf (2 goals, 3 assists) and
Olivia Eilbacher (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) (3 goals, 2 assists) had five-point days. Axe and
Katie Yocum (Hanover, Pa./South Western) both netted two goals and
Kayla Brooks (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) added one.
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) contributed an assist in the win.
Â
Kutztown hits the road for its next two games, beginning this Saturday, April 22, at Millersville for a 1 p.m., PSAC East contest. KU will then square off with two nationally-ranked teams in West Chester (4/26) and East Stroudsburg (4/29) next week to conclude the regular season.
