Women's bowling wins four on opening day of Northeast Roundup, Sromovski posts high average

| By:
NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Junior Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) led all players with a 216.6 average and the Kutztown University women's bowling team won four matches, including a ranked victory over No. 18 Mount St. Mary's, to open play at the Northeast Roundup hosted by Wilmington University, Saturday.

Sromovski was on it from the start, rolling a 201 to lead the Golden Bears (39-31) past the host Wildcats, 834-782, in their first match and a 203 to top Molloy, 910-829, in their second. Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) bowled well, too, posting the second-highest score on the team in both matches with a 187 against Wilmington and a 189 versus Molloy. Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) added a 183 score for KU.

Kutztown improved to 3-0 on the day by taking down Caldwell, 896-807. Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York) went 203 to lead the charge for the Maroon and Gold, while Hanaway recorded a 188, Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) a 183 and Sromovski a 180.

Angela Reynolds' team was at its best against nationally-ranked Mount St. Mary's, topping the 1000-pin mark with a commanding 1008-825 triumph. Sromovski was stellar with a 267, while Hanaway (198), Brenneman (190) and Snyder (182) were strong in support.

The Bears couldn't quite complete a Saturday sweep, falling to Chestnut Hill 955-832 in their final match of the day. Sromovski once again showed the way with a 232.

Sromovski, a Wilkes-Barre, Pa., native, is guaranteed MVP and all-tournament team honors after her performance in traditional format play. She scored 1,083 over five games for a tournament-best 216.6 average, edging Fairleigh Dickinson's Julianna Spina (215.4) by six pins.

Hanaway finished 15th in the individual standings at 182.8.

As a team, Kutztown heads into Sunday's Baker matches ranked fifth of 14 teams with a score of 4,480 (179.2 average). Fairleigh Dickinson leads the way at 4,734 (189.4), with Mount St. Mary's second at 4,602 (184.1), Merrimack third at 4,529 (181.2) and Mercyhurst fourth at 4,511 (180.4).

The Golden Bears will have to be ready to go as they take on No. 15 Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 23 Merrimack in their first two matches. They'll be jockeying for positioning through four Baker matches before playing a best-of-seven championship round match in the afternoon.

Bowling begins at 9 a.m.
