Golden Bears celebrate 50 Years of Women’s Basketball, roll over Mansfield 71-49

KUTZTOWN, Pa.-- On the day Kutztown celebrated 50 Years of Women's Basketball, the Kutztown University women's basketball team (12-14, 10-10 PSAC) gave the fans in Keystone Arena something else to cheer about, as it defeated Mansfield (3-22, 2-19 PSAC) 71-49 Saturday afternoon.

12 different Golden Bears saw the floor for Janet Malouf's squad in the victory. Leading the way was senior Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy). The Philadelphia native showed out scoring a season-high 17 points to go along with a team-high seven boards and three assists. Remolde also registered four steals and two blocks.

Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) had another solid game for the Golden Bears, netting 15 points. Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon), Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown), Shannon Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), Noelle Baxter (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen), Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe), and Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) were the other Golden Bears to register a basket in the victory.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, but KU took advantage of Mansfield's 14 turnovers to take a 34-25 lead into the half. The Mounties outscored KU 18-16 in the third quarter to keep the game close heading into the fourth.

The Golden Bears then locked it down in the fourth quarter, holding Mansfield to only six points to secure the 71-49 victory. The Golden Bears had a significant 31-18 turnover advantage in the game, which results in a 41-15 advantage in points off turnovers. KU never trailed in the contest.

The Golden Bears are back in the win column after dropping the last two games. A win in one of the final two games or a Lock Haven loss would secure a PSAC Tournament birth for the Golden Bears.

KU is back in action on the road this Wednesday, Feb. 22 against Bloomsburg. That game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
