McKee leads Golden Bears to pair of tri-meet victories

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Gracie McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) won two individual events and contributed to a relay victory as the Kutztown University women's swim team defeated East Stroudsburg, 105-99, and California (Pa.), 130-68, Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

McKee set a PSAC qualifying time in her first attempt at the 400-yard individual medley this season, winning the event by more than 12 seconds in a time of 4:45.39. The graduate student from Boyertown also led off the Golden Bears' victorious 200 medley relay team and eclipsed a PSAC time in taking the 100 backstroke (59.79).

Sophomore Annamarie Rodier (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) joined McKee as Kutztown's (3-1, 2-1 PSAC) only individual multi-event winners. Rodier swept the distance free races with a season-best and PSAC cut time of 10:46.49 in the 1000 and another PSAC qualifying time of 5:18.39 in the 500.

Birta Smaradottir (Mosfellsbær, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) was involved in a pair of wins for the Maroon and Gold. The first-year Golden Bear from Iceland teamed with McKee, Ana Soto (Hamburg, N.J./Vernon Township) and Frannie Pease-Wingenter (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) as KU held off ESU to win the meet-opening 200 medley relay in 1:53.89. Two events later, Smaradottir captured the 200 free in a season-best 2:04.68.

Pease-Wingenter swam her fast time of the season –and a PSAC qualifying time—of 25.73 in the 50 free. Performance continued to improve for Kutztown and head coach Tim Flannery, with 16 season-best times set.

In addition to winning six of 11 events, Kutztown got a runner-up finish from Soto in the 100 free (56.84) and its 400 free relay team of Pease-Wingenter, Trinity Miller (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant), Soto and Rodier (3:48.24).

The same three teams will compete in another tri-meet Saturday at noon in Kutztown's Keystone Natatorium.
