Sromovski averages 200 as Golden Bears go 3-1 to open Bud Whitman Memorial

NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) registered the fourth-highest individual average with a 200.0 in traditional play, leading Kutztown to a 3-1 record and fifth-place in the team standings following the opening day of the Bud Whitman Memorial, Saturday, at Bowlerama in New Castle, Del.

Sromovski was ready for the new season from the start, rolling her high game for the day, a 210, as Kutztown took down Howard, 879-792 in its opener. Sophomore Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) followed with a 187.

The Golden Bears used a 207 from Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) and Sromovski's 192 to top Alvernia 837-769 and move to 2-0 on the day. Sromovski was back in the 200s with a 202 and Hanaway had another strong showing with a 190, allowing KU to collect another convincing victory, this time 849-720 over Felician.

In its bye slot, Kutztown registered its best score of the day with an 887. Sromovski showed the way with a 197, followed closely by Ripley (187) and Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) (171).

Kutztown suffered its only setback in the finale against nationally ranked Delaware State. The No. 23 Hornets held off the Bears by 53 pins, despite 199s from Brenneman and Sromovski.

Sromovski was one of only four players in the tournament to average 200 or better, finishing behind only Charlize Wanner of LIU (219.2), Logan Brown of Wilmington (211.8) and Sydney Reardon of Delaware State (200.6). Hanaway ranked 15th with a 178.6.

As a team, KU averaged 172.3. Delaware State sits atop the standings heading into Sunday's matches with a 183.0 average. LIU is second at 182.9, Wilmington third at 181.5 and Molloy fourth at 174.2.

Kutztown faces off against Chestnut Hill, LIU, Molloy and Coppin State on Sunday, before finishing the against an opponent that will be determined upon overall tournament seeding.
