KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Grace Harrold (York, Pa./Central York) and
Mackenzie Kile (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) scored goals for third-ranked Kutztown Field Hockey, but hard-hit shots from Taryn Mayer (2) and Tess Jedeloo of second-ranked Shippensburg found the back of the cage as Ship edged KU 3-2 Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup of top-five, nationally-ranked teams inside Andre Reed Stadium.
Â
The Golden Bears (9-2 overall, 3-2 PSAC) created plenty of chances, outshooting the Raiders (11-2, 5-0) 10-9 overall and had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners, but Shippensburg capitalized on its chances more often.
Â
Harrold opened up the scoring in the game with her second goal of the season off an assist by
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot), 10:01 into the game. It didn't take long for the Raiders to respond as Taryn Mayer netted the first of her two goals just 0:21 later. Mayer then took matters into her own hands and gave her team their first lead of the game as she ripped a shot that went side netting and zoomed past the glove of
Mia Kepler (Wall Township, N.J./Wall), 2:51 into the second quarter.
Â
With 4:50 left until halftime, there was a ton of action in front of the Shippensburg cage and KU was rewarded with a penalty stroke. Kile neatly slotted the shot into the left side of the cage to tie the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.
Â
Tess Jedeloo broke the deadlock on a Shippensburg penalty corner after she took a pass from Yasmin De Meyer and ripped home the goal with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter. That goal proved to be the game winner as the Raiders held on to Kutztown offensive pressures in the fourth quarter.
Â
Kepler finished with one save in cage for KU.
Â
Kutztown hits the road to take on Mansfield under the lights this Saturday, Oct. 14, as the teams will play in a PSAC game at 6 p.m. The previous meeting, which was a non-conference game scheduled for Sept. 9, was canceled due to bad weather.
