2022 CRC HOMEPAGE | TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE | MEN'S PREMIER BRACKET
KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Nationally-ranked Kutztown University men's rugby, the No. 1 seed in the East Region, heads to New Orleans for this weekend's Collegiate Rugby Championship with the top prize squarely in mind.
It's been an outstanding spring sevens season for coach
Dr. Gregg A. Jones and the Golden Bears, with Jones' top side winning its last 16 matches dating all the way back to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Invitational in late March.
Strong performances from players such as
Logan Bachman (Kutztown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic),
Steven Doyling (Warwick, Bermuda/Bermuda Institute),
Kekoa Kauwe (Orem, Utah/Pleasant Grove),
Mate Kvirikashvili (Kutaisi, Ga./Monroe Woodbury (N.Y.)),
Thorne O'Connell (Johannesburg, South Africa/Jeppe),
P.J. O'Reilly (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), along with the contributions of many more across the roster have put Kutztown in position as one of the favorites this weekend. The Collegiate Rugby Championship is being contested at the Gold Mine on Airline Complex, home of Major League Rugby's New Orleans Gold, after many years at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa., just over an hour's drive from the Kutztown campus.
Kutztown is riding the momentum of tournament victories at the Apres Rugby 7s CRC Qualifier (April 2), the Battle for the Border Sevens Tournament (April 9) and the Gavin Gill Memorial Sevens Tournament at Ohio State (April 23). The Bears are ranked fourth in the latest National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Top 25 Coaches Poll and earned the top seed in the East Region of the 32-team CRC Men's Premier tournament.
The Golden Bears will kick off bracket play with a first round match against eighth-seeded Maryland on Saturday at 5:28 p.m. EDT. The Golden Bears and Terrapins will meet in the Shrine on Airline Stadium, with the game carried on The Rugby Network. A victory for KU means a second round matchup with the winner of the No. 4 seed Iowa State/No. 5 seed Louisville match, also in the stadium, Sunday at 10:58 a.m. EDT. That match is also scheduled to air on The Rugby Network. The Kutztown/Maryland loser will fall into the Survivor Shield bracket and face the Iowa State/Louisville loser at 10:20 a.m. EDT Sunday.
Games throughout the weekend will be carried on The Rugby Network and NCR's YouTube Channel. The Challenge Bowl Final, Survivor Shield Final, Champion Plate Final, National Cup Third Place match and National Cup Final will be carried on CBS Sports Network.
