Women's bowling claims third at CSU Lady Eagles Invitational; Sromovski named to all-tournament team

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Kutztown University women's bowling team wrapped up its weekend at the Coppin State University Lady Eagles Invitational with a third-place finish, Sunday, after splitting a pair of five quint Baker matches and a pair of best-of-7 bracket matches inside AMF Woodlawn Lanes.

After going 4-0 in traditional format play yesterday, Kutztown was searching for more of the same, but could not overcome Norfolk State's hot start in its Baker opener. The Spartans fired a 213 right off the bat and carried the lead the rest of the way in an 850-793 victory.

The Golden Bears (17-13) rebounded with Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic), Eleni Feggulis (South River, N.J./South River), Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York), Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) teaming to defeat Bloomfield, 848-793. KU won the first game 188-161 before gaining seven pins in the second. After Bloomfield won the third, the Maroon and Gold took control with a 179-144 victory in the fourth.

Kutztown had a chance to reach the championship match with a victory over Coppin State, but didn't have its "A game" against the hosts, falling in five. Coppin State won the first three games of the series and denied any chance of a KU comeback by closing it out with a 189-175 victory in the fifth.

Snyder, Feggulis, Brenneman and Sromovski were joined by Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) in the third-place match against Chestnut Hill. This time, the Bears turned it up a level, rolling a 202 in game one and a 216 in game two to take a quick 2-0 series lead.

The Griffins got one back in game three, 172-156, but Kutztown's third 200+ game of the series, a 210-151 victory, made it 3-1. Another tight game in the fourth went to CHC, before the Bears prevailed 179-164 in the sixth to win the match, 4-2.

Sromovski was named to the all-tournament team on the strength of her finish in the individual standings during Saturday's traditional match portion of the tournament. The junior from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., registered the third-highest average among all bowlers with a 190.6 over five matches.

Kutztown's schedule takes a two-month competition hiatus with the holidays and winter break on the horizon. The Golden Bears are next scheduled to take part in the Northeast Classic, Jan. 20-22, 2023, in Deptford, N.J.
