BALTIMORE, Md. -- Kutztown University women's bowling went a perfect 4-0 on the opening day of the Coppin State University Lady Eagles Invitational, Saturday, at AMF Woodlawn Lanes.
Behind a match-high 212 from
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) and a supporting 189 from
Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton), the Golden Bears came out strong with an 834-710 victory over Caldwell.
Kutztown (15-11) took down Chestnut Hill 828-784 in its second match as all five bowlers in the starting lineup were separated by just 19 pins.
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York) rolled her second 172 game of the day and was followed closely by
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) (171),
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) (168), Sromovski (164) and Wunch (153).
The Maroon and Gold had a bye round in their third match with Buffalo-based D'Youville College unable to travel due to the more than six feet of snow that fell there over the last few days. While there was no win-loss going on KU's docket, the Bears still managed to record their best score of the day with a 915. Snyder led the way with a career-best 213 and Sromovski just missed her second 200-game of the day with a 197.
Snyder was up to the task again in Kutztown's runaway 867-426 victory over Virginia State. The freshman from Morrisville, Pa., threw a team-high 201 ahead of Sromovski's 187 and Brenneman's 180.
KU closed out Saturday's traditional match format with an 839-779 win over Howard. Sromovski paced the Bears with a 193, while Brenneman and Wunch sported matching 174s.
Sromovski finished the day with a 953 series, averaging a team-best 190.6 across all five matches. Snyder put forth a 182.5 average in four matches (730) and Brenneman a 170.8 average in five matches (854).
Kutztown tied with Bloomfield for third in the team standings with 4,283 total pins and 171.3 averages. Both teams are nipping at the heels of second-place Wagner (4,284/171.4) with host and leader Coppin State just over 100 pins ahead (4,412/176.5).
The Golden Bears are scheduled to face Norfolk State and Bloomfield Sunday in Baker format matches before competing in a pair of best-of-7 bracket matches.
