Knecht, Golden Bears finish third at home tournament

| By:
FLEETWOOD, Pa. -- Cecelia Knecht (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) claimed a third-place finish while leading the Golden Bear women's golf team to third-place as the Kutztown Fall Invitational concluded Monday afternoon at Moselem Springs Golf Club.

Knecht and her teammates battled through less-than-ideal conditions throughout the tournament. The final round nearly mirrored that of Sunday's first 18 holes with cold, wind and rain taking center stage.

Knecht picked up her third top-five finish in five fall tournaments with a 12-over par final round 82 for a two-day total of 22-over 162 (80-82). The senior birdied the 365-yard, par 4 second and amassed seven pars Monday.

Olivia Donnini (Wapwallopen, Pa./Crestwood) matched her opening round score, going 90-90=180 for the tournament to tie for 15th. The Wapwallopen, Pa., native carded a birdie on No. 3, a par 3 playing at 125 yards.

One shot back of Donnini was freshman Alexis Peet (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack), who posted a career-best finish by tying for 17th. Peet, coming off the best round of her young career yesterday, followed up an 89 with a 92 Monday. She had a birdie on the 130-yard, par 3 No. 15 along with two pars.

Fellow first-year player Gabby Cohen (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Sullivan West) recorded four pars and cut three shots off her opening round score to post a 185 (94-91) for the tournament. Cohen finished 21st, directly in front of teammate Grace Babinchak (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton), who tied for 22nd with a 187 (97-90).

Babinchak was one of four Golden Bears with a second-round birdie, with hers coming on No. 13, a 150-yard par 3. She also added four pars.

Alexis Verdes (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) also competed for Kutztown, entering the tournament as an individual. She registered a two-day total of 233 (115-118).

Alvernia, backed by the top two finishers in medalist McKylie Boreman (76-77=153) and Yupha Muzyka (79-79-158), won the tournament by 18 shots over Millersville. The Golden Wolves combined to shoot 103-over 663 across 36 holes (328-335). Millersville bettered its opening round score by seven shots for a 681 (344-337), while the Golden Bears shot matching scores of 353 each day to total 706 for third.

Kutztown will close out its fall schedule with a trip to Pinecrest Country Club in Brookeville, Pa., for the Clarion Fall Invitational, Oct. 16-17.
