BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Freshman point guard
Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) stepped to the free throw line with the poise of a player well beyond his years and calmly sank both of his attempts with 0.1 seconds remaining.
The clutch shots allowed Kutztown to overcome Bloomsburg's late comeback bid and win its second straight last-second thriller, 75-74, in a PSAC East game at Nelson Fieldhouse Wednesday evening.
Everything seemed to be going to plan for the Golden Bears down the stretch before the Huskies' Justin Anderson nearly single-handedly willed his team to a win with eight points in the final minute, the last two of which came on a fadeaway jumper from the left baseline with 5.8 seconds left that put Bloomsburg up 74-73.
Coach
Bernie Driscoll allowed his team to play the final seconds out and Bryant raced the length of the court into the lane where he was met by three Huskies at the rim and fouled as time expired. After conferring, the officials put 0.1 back on the clock.
Needing one to tie and two to win, the Edgewood, Md., native, who was in near the same situation last Wednesday at Lock Haven, got all net on both to cap a perfect 8-for-8 night at the charity stripe. The victory lifted Kutztown to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC.
The Maroon and Gold led by as many as five in the final minute and made 12-of-13 free throws in the second half (92.3%), including all six --all by Bryant-- in the last 53 seconds.
A follow-up lay in by
Channick Nkoma (Libreville, Gabon/Lycee National Leon M'ba) broke a 64-all tie with 2:08 to play. Kutztown responded with a stop defensively and
Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) hit an open three from the left corner after beautiful ball movement from Bryant and
Evan-Eric Longino (Furlong, Pa./Germantown Academy) got their teammate a premium look deep in the shot clock for a 69-64 advantage.
All the work Kutztown had done for 39 minutes was nearly negated by Anderson, who was a one-man wrecking crew for Bloomsburg (3-9, 2-6 PSAC) all night.
Trailing 71-66, the junior guard from Philadelphia popped off a screen and connected on an off-balance trey from a few feet beyond the line. After Bryant made two more freebies at the other end, Anderson hit a running three with a hand in his face to trim the deficit to one, 73-72.
Kutztown turned the ball over on its inbounds attempt and Anderson made them pay, coming all the way across the lane, taking a pass from Justin Rodriguez and connecting with the go-ahead jumper.
Bryant and the Golden Bears have been a resilient bunch since the holidays and they found a way to get it done on their final possession. It's too early to tell, but KU's last three games may very well serve as a turning point this season. They led No. 7 Mercyhurst by double digits in the second half last Saturday, rallied from 16 down to beat West Chester at the buzzer on Monday and, now, withstood Bloomsburg's frantic comeback.
Generett continued his strong play this week with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting after posting a career-high 20 against the Golden Rams two days earlier. The York, Pa., product has scored in double figures in five of his last seven games.
Nkoma made seven of eight shots on the night to finish with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Bryant had 12 points. Longino added 10 points and six boards. Kutztown shot 49.2% overall (30-of-61), using 48 points in the paint and 14 free throws to offset a 1-for-9 effort from 3-point range.
Bloomsburg's Anderson led all scorers with 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting. He was 2-of-3 from deep, but both came in the final 40 seconds. Travis Elmore had 12 points for the Huskies and Jake Nelson finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Huskies turned it over 16 times to Kutztown's 10 in a game that featured 14 lead changes and was tied 15 times.
Kutztown returns home to Keystone Arena, Saturday, where it will go for its third consecutive win in a PSAC East battle against Shepherd. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
