PHILADELPHIA -- Kutztown picked up a point in singles and got a win from its first doubles team in a 6-1 loss to Jefferson indoors at the Legacy Youth Tennis Center Monday afternoon.
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) salvaged one of the three doubles matches for the visitors with a 6-4 victory over Odissey Kavak and Ahmed Aboseada, but by that point Jefferson had already claimed the coveted doubles points with decisive wins in the second and third flight matches.
Kutztown's (1-5) lone point came from sophomore
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic), who won third singles after Kavak retired midway through the second set. The Rams won the remaining five matches in straight sets, improving to 4-2 on the season in the process.
Arizpe's six games won against Berks County native Liviu Trifoi in a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 2 were the most of any Golden Bear. Barcelo took five games off Hannibal Borg, but fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, and
Bobby Frankenfield (Telford, Pa./Souderton) captured four games in a 6-2, 6-2 defeat against Aboseada at No. 6.
After playing its three previous matches at home, Monday's match marked the first of four straight away from the Keystone Courts for the KU men. They'll return to action this Saturday with a 1 p.m. PSAC match at Shepherd.
