Baseball sweeps Frostburg State for first 4-0 start since 2015

ABERDEEN, Md. – The Kutztown University baseball team is off to a fast start to the 2021 season. For the second time in three days, KU took both games of a doubleheader against Frostburg State, winning 16-6 and 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Ripken Yankee Stadium in Aberdeen, Md.

The Golden Bears (4-0 overall) are off to their best start to a season since 2015 when they opened that campaign winning the first eight games.

Junior Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) connected for a grand slam in game one and freshman Ethan Martini (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) continued his tear in his first collegiate action, hitting his second long ball of the year as the offense one-upped itself from Friday's two-game tilt, combining to score 20 runs Sunday after plating 19 in the two games Friday.

"We're all excited to just get back onto the field," said head coach Eric Folmar. "It was great to see, not only the wins we had down here, but the guys happy to be playing again with their brothers. They played really well this weekend and I'm proud of the start we have this season."

Kutztown begins its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference portion of the schedule next weekend. KU takes on Lock Haven University for four games, beginning on Friday, March 12, on the road. The Golden Bears have their home-opener against the Bald Eagles the following day.

Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) would earn the win for Kutztown, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings.

Kutztown 16, Frostburg State 6

After a scoreless first the Golden Bears jumped out to a four-run lead in the second, Martini continued his hot streak hitting his second three run home run of the weekend. The Maroon and Gold continued to load up the bases and Zack Moretski walked the fourth run of the inning across the plate.

The Bobcats started to show life in the top of the fourth when they strung together five hits and four runs in the inning. In the bottom half of the inning Kutztown answered, bringing 17 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs. Peers hit a grand slam for his first career homerun as a Golden Bear. Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) also had three RBIs in the inning after hitting a bases clearing triple.

Frostburg State scored two more runs in the top of the sixth but were unable to overcome the 12-run lead and the Maroon and Gold would go on to win the game 16-6.

Kutztown 4, Frostburg State 2

Kutztown got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun from Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) for the first of his career. Frostburg State eventually answered when a sac fly brought their first run across the plate.

Strong pitching from both sides kept this low scoring game close, the Golden Bears starter, Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.), threw four innings only allowing one hit and one run while striking out seven.

Kutztown would score again in the fourth, Peers gets on base after being hit by a pitch to be later driven in on a single to center field by Mike Piscotty (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area).

The Bobcats would answer in the top of the fifth scoring one after a walk and double tying the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Maroon and Gold take the lead on a pinch hit two run double by Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), scoring Proietto and Peers.

Zach Peters (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) would come on to close it out throwing two scoreless innings and earning his second win on the weekend for the Golden Bears.
