Bats come alive as Kutztown defeats East Stroudsburg 28-13 Tuesday in a non-conference game

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team's bats erupt for 28 runs for the first time since 2002, taking down East Stroudsburg University 28-13 Tuesday in a non-conference competition. The Golden Bears had 26 hits on the day, the first time the Golden Bear offense posted those numbers since 2011.

Ethan Martini (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) had a monster day at the plate, KU's centerfielder went 5-for-7 at the plate and was a homerun short of hitting for the cycle. Martini is the first KU baseball player to have five hits in a game since Joe Santospago in 2017.

Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) was another Golden Bear to have a momentous day at the plate, being the first player to score six times in a game since 2011.

For the first time in the stat era, since 1999, the Maroon and Gold had two players record five RBIs in a single game. Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) both tallied five RBIs today becoming the first Golden Bears to do so in the same game.

Martini led the game off with a bang, hitting a triple on the first pitch of the game getting the Bears offense rolling early. Martini would come across to score on a single by Collin Bishop (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional).

Kutztown pitching had trouble finding the strike zone in the bottom of the first, East Stroudsburg was able to score three runs while only having one hit.

Kutztown would retake the lead in the top of the second. After a walk and a single, Peers would launch the first KU homerun of the day bringing three runs across the plate.

After a clean bottom half of the second, the Golden Bears would extend their lead in the top of the third, scoring five more runs on four hits. With the bases loaded Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) laced a single bringing in two runs before Z. Moretski would hit his first homerun of the day launching a ball over the wall in right center bringing in three more runs.

The Warriors would plate one more in the bottom of the fourth via a solo homerun.

In the top of the fifth KU would continue their impressive day at the plate scoring three runs on three more hits. Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) would lead off the inning with a double to right center, followed up by a walk to Z. Morestki. With two runners on Proietto would smash his second homerun of the year to centerfield.

ESU would score one more in the bottom of the fifth but could not keep up with the Maroon and Gold as they would go on to score eight more runs in the top of the sixth. Six Golden Bears would record RBIs in the inning, Bishop would record two more to his total on a double to left center.

Z. Moretski would hit his second homerun of the game, this one a solo shot to right center bringing Kutztown's lead to 21-5 over the Warriors.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors would make their best attempt to overcome the 16-run deficit, scoring seven runs in the inning on four hits. After getting out of the inning and leaving two runners stranded on second, the Golden Bears would answer with a seven-run inning of their own.

After the first batter would reach first on a walk, Cole Regn (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) would record his first career hit on a single to left field. Five Golden Bears would record RBIs, including two apiece for freshmen Joe Pettinelli and Martini.

In the top of the ninth, Kutztown was held scoreless, but Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) would record his first career hit on line drive to centerfield for a single. In the bottom half of the inning ESU would manage to bring across one more run but Jake Skrocki (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) would close the door on the Warriors.

Steve Wagner (Henderson, Nev./Boulder City) would earn the win for Kutztown, moving to 2-1 on the year. Tom Reisinger takes his first loss of the year for East Stroudsburg.
