LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team's win streak has now reached double digits as it took both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Lock Haven University Thursday afternoon. KU won game one 6-0 and took game two 3-2 against the Bald Eagles, in a doubleheader that had to be postponed three different times due to weather.
The Golden Bears (13-3 overall, 10-2 PSAC) continued their hot streak and have now won 10 games in-a-row and 13 of their last 14 overall.
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) finished with five hits in seven at-bats Tuesday, including three runs batted in.
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) and
Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) both had three hits on the day, with Auvil recording two RBI and Ostaszewski two runs scored. Auvil's 28 hits this season is tops in the conference.
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area),
Paola Texidor (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Zoe Texidor (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) all tallied two hits each over the two games.
Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) struck out five and allowed just four hits scattered throughout the seven innings to earn her PSAC-leading seventh victory on the season. Her 1.38 ERA ranks third.
Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) started game two and struck out a season-high six Lock Haven batters, on her way to her fourth win of the year.
Kutztown has a quick turnaround, remaining on the road for a PSAC twin bill at Shepherd University tomorrow, Friday, March 26. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
Kutztown 6, Lock Haven 0
The Kutztown bats erupted for 17 hits, the most since April 27, 2019, at East Stroudsburg University, when KU totaled 19 hits.
Donato went 4-for-4 at the dish, a career-high for hits in a game for the senior. Two of those four hits were for extra bases and brought in runs, recording two RBI doubles. Her double to left field in the top of the first inning put KU on the board.
The Maroon and Gold scored a run in each of the first two innings, both came with two outs.
Following singles from Ostaszewski and P. Texidor, Auvil ripped a run-scoring double to left to give her team a 2-0 advantage after two. The senior's nine doubles so far this season leads the PSAC.
Ostaszewski, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Auvil paired for two Kutztown runs in the fourth as the former doubled to left, scoring Z. Texidor, and the latter singled up the middle, bringing around Ostaszewski.
The Golden Bears tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth via Donato's second run-scoring double and an RBI single by freshman
Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, Pa./Central), her third RBI in the last two games.
Bailey retired her last eight batters in-a-row to finish off a complete game shutout, her fourth this season.
Kutztown 3, Lock Haven 2
Kutztown took the lead two different times and then had to hold on late, with the Bald Eagles threatening with the tying runner at second base. Harvey made sure of the win by striking out the final batter to strand the runner at second.
Donato continued her offensive outburst, singling up the middle, allowing Ostaszewski to cross home plate for the game's first run. Lock Haven got on the board for the first time Tuesday in the bottom-half of the first inning, thanks to an RBI groundout that tied the game.
After two scoreless innings out of both teams, the Golden Bears struck for two thanks to the bat of their starting pitcher. Lipowski led off the fourth with a walk and two batters later, Harvey connected on a two-run homerun, the first of her career, to give KU the lead back at 3-1.
The Bald Eagles got one back in the sixth on a run-scoring groundout, but that was all that they could muster up from there.
