KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown women's lacrosse honored its senior class prior to Saturday's game against Georgian Court at Keystone Field. The Golden Bears hung tough with a solid Lions squad, but couldn't quite erase a seven-goal first-half deficit in dropping the non-conference matchup 16-10.
With limited guests of the Bears' eight seniors in the stands to cheer them on, KU (0-2) used a 6-3 run spanning nearly 20 minutes from the end of the first half through the midway point of the second to trim Georgian Court's advantage to 14-10 with 13:22 left.
Sophomore
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) scored back-to-back goals on free position attempts, senior
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) added a pair of her own and
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) also found the back of the net during the spurt.
The Lions (2-0) tightened up defensively in the late stages, though, holding the hosts scoreless and limiting them to just three shots over the final 13 minutes. Two of the Bears' shots were stopped by GCU goalie Alexis Hahn, who finished with 13 saves.
Riley O'Connor and Shaine Sauter padded the Lions' lead late. O'Connor and teammate Madison Heck shared game-high honors with five goals apiece. Heck also had an assist and five draw controls. Sauter, Sabrina Chandler and Amanda Marino tallied twice.
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), another of the Bears' seniors, collected three points on a pair of goals and an assist. She was one of three KU players to enjoy three-point games along with Conteh (2 goals, assist) and Hurd (goal, 2 assists).
Fellow seniors
Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) and
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) also scored in the game for the Maroon and Gold.
Conteh led the team with five draw controls, while Fitzpatrick had four and four ground balls. Fitzpatrick is one ground ball shy of becoming the 14th player in program history to record 100 in a career and is just 10 draw controls short of the century mark as well.
Georgian Court was a sterling 6-for-6 on free position tries in the first half and ended the day 6-of-7. Both teams totaled 17 ground balls and 14 draw controls, but Hahn was a difference maker in the cage for the guests.
Joining Cafferata, Fitzpatrick, McCormick and Vaughan Ware in Senior Day ceremonies were
Kaily Crystle (Springfield, Pa./Springfield),
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township),
Taylor Small (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and
Makenna Warminsky (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland). Crystle, Warminsky and Lane all started, while Small was forced to miss the game due to injury.
Kutztown returns to PSAC East play next Saturday at Bloomsburg at 2 p.m.
