KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team had six players score in double figures as KU defeated Penn State Berks 115-46 Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena in non-conference action to grab its first win of the season.
Kutztown blew open the game at the start, climbing out to a 32-5 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half. KU led by 37 at halftime, before jumping out to a 10-2 run to start the second half. The Golden Bears had a 71-point lead at one point in the game and would end up taking the game by a 69-point margin.
The leading scorer in the game was
John Proctor (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), who had a career-high 15 points coming off of the bench.
Robert Tucker (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson), who also came off the bench, scored 14 points, a season-high, and grabbed nine rebounds in just 18 minutes of action, shooting 86-percent from the field.
Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) had 12 points on the day, while
Ky'Aire Sumpter (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg),
John Gillespie (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), and
Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) each had nine points as reserves.
KU starter
Akeem Taylor Jr. (Chester, Pa./Chester) stuffed the stat sheet against the Nittany Lions, scoring 10 points to go along with five steals and one block.
Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) had 11 points,
Channick Nkoma (Libreville, Gabon/Lycee National Leon M'ba) scored 12 points, and
Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) contributed 14 points and three steals as starters for Kutztown.
Kutztown registered season-highs in points, field goals made, rebounds, assists, and steals on Saturday. KU's 49 field goals made is also the most made in a game since the 2017-18 season.
The Golden Bears' 115 points is the most the program has scored in a single game since December of 2019, when they had 120 points against Cheyney. KU held Penn State Berks to just 46 points, which is the lowest its held an opponent to since January of 2015, when KU held Mercyhurst to just 43.
Kutztown will be off next week for Thanksgiving break, but will be back in action Sunday, Nov. 28th, at 1 p.m., for a road game against Goldey-Beacom.
