SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) had a team-high 12 kills and
Emma Filipovits (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and
Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) each added 11, but it wasn't enough to keep host Shippensburg from earning a split of the season series with the Kutztown University women's volleyball team, 3-1, Friday night in a PSAC East match at Heiges Field House.
The Raiders took the first two sets in the by scores of 25-19 and 25-23. Kutztown (7-15, 2-7 PSAC East) held a lead late into the second, 23-22, following a Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) kill, but Shippensburg managed to score the final three points in the set to put the Bears on the brink of a sweep. Lily Letchworth played a major role at the end of the set assisting or scoring the last 4 points for the Raiders.
Kutztown bounced back in the third set winning 25-15 to extend the match. The Maroon and Gold tied the set at five early and would lead the rest of the way, eventually running away with it by scoring 10 of the last 11 points, the last three all aces from Doss.
Shippensburg (11-13, 4-5 PSAC East) eventually put the match away, 25-18, in the fourth.
The trio of Jackson, Filipovits and Patterson combined for 34 of KU's 43 kills on the night. The visitors hit .174 overall with 43 kills and 17 errors on 149 attempts. Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the team with 31 digs, Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) collected 36 assists and Doss posted a match-high five services aces.
Prior to the match, Shippensburg's coaching staff recognized KU head coach John Gump with a rocking chair and other gifts recognizing his long and accomplished career with the Bears. Gump announced earlier this month that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2021 season.
Kutztown remains on the road to close out the weekend. The Golden Bears will be in West Virginia Saturday for a match against Shepherd. The Rams are currently in a three-way tie atop the league standings at 7-2 with West Chester and East Stroudsburg. Match time is 1 p.m.
