HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Kutztown University women's tennis team collected its first win of the spring in its Hilton Head Island finale, 4-3, over Edinboro on Wednesday.
The Golden Bears' No. 2 pair of
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) held off Torye Calleja and Anna Zak, 6-4, as Kutztown (2-7) claimed the doubles point. Edinboro defaulted at third doubles to give KU two out of three matches.
Another default by the Fighting Scots (1-10) left the Maroon and Gold needing to win just two of the five remaining singles flights.
Edinboro got on the board with a 6-0, 6-0 win by Lilly Ann Schmidt at No. 1, but Kutztown secured the next two wins to clinch the match. Maher blanked Lauren Chiacchia 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, while Makarski was nearly flawless in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Zak at No. 3.
Freshman
Devyn Campbell (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) took Morgan Bender to a first-set tiebreaker at No. 4, but Bender prevailed for a 7-6 (1), 6-3 win. Senior
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) registered five game wins against Calleja at No. 2 in falling 6-2, 6-3.
Kutztown which snapped a four-match winless streak, is scheduled to open PSAC East play at home against West Chester on Saturday, March 21, at noon.
