BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomores
Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) and
Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) helped deliver the Kutztown University softball team to a 1-0 non-conference win over Caldwell Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.
Â
The Golden Bears (10-6 overall) earned their second 1-0 victory in two days, having defeated Nova Southeastern by the same score less than 24 hours prior on Tuesday night.
Â
Bailey threw a complete game, shutout, allowing just five hits in seven innings to record her fourth win of the season, tied for third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Ostaszewski, who also had one of KU's five hits on the day, had an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning for the lone run of the game.
Â
After a scoreless first four innings that featured just six combined hits between the two teams, Kutztown broke through in the fifth. With one out,
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) doubled to left field and then advanced to third after a
Taylor Knappenberger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) single the next batter. Ostaszewski then took an 0-1 pitch and hit a fly ball to center field, which allowed Auvil to tag up and touch home plate.
Â
Knappenberger finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) had the lone other hit for KU.
Â
Kutztown will be back to playing two games a day for the remaining three days of its trip in Florida. KU will take on PSAC opponent Indiana (Pa.) tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, at 2:45 p.m., before squaring off with Wayne State (Mich.) at 5 p.m.
