CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) hit a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the seventh inning as Kutztown defeated Ohio Dominican, 5-4, in game one of a twin bill at VA Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
Collin Bishop (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) erupted for four hits, two home runs and five RBIs as the Golden Bears set a new season-high for runs in taking the nightcap, 16-5.
GAME 1
Kutztown 5, Ohio Dominican 4
The Golden Bears were rejuvenated upon hitting the field after a two-week break and quickly overcame a one-run deficit with a three-run third inning to take the lead in game one against the Panthers (1-6).
Jacoby Pate (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) followed a single from
Greg Power (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) with a double to put a pair of KU runners in scoring position for
Mitch Pinder (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown). The senior, who produced back-to-back .300 seasons before missing 2019 due to injury, came through with a two-run double to center to put the Golden Bears (3-2) in front.
Later in the inning,
Collin Bishop (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) cracked a two-out RBI single to increase Kutztown's lead to 3-1.
KU starting pitcher
Doug Conrad (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West) was strong through the first four frames, allowing just three singles, a run and a walk. An early error in the bottom of the fifth and two passed balls helped position ODU to score, and the hosts tied the game on a single and fielder's choice.
Manny Vorhees then led off the sixth with a solo homer to left for a 4-3 Panther lead.
Kutztown showed its resolve in the top of the seventh.
Jake Augustus (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and Bishop collected back-to-back singles and Moretski found the gap in right to bring them home as the Maroon and Gold reclaimed the lead, 5-4.
Zach Peters (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made it stick, retiring three of the four hitters he faced in the bottom of the seventh for his second career save.
Augustus and Bishop were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Aaron Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) doubled for his only hit, giving KU four on the day and 14 through its first five games. The Golden Bears have already had a five-double game and two four-double performances.
Conrad earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the season. He went six innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out four.
GAME 2
Kutztown 16, Ohio Dominican 5
Kutztown jumped all over the Panthers early, scoring 10 times in the first three innings and belting its first three home runs of the season in a runaway victory to complete the sweep.
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) thee-run shot in the top of the first got the Bears going and they never looked back. Five hits and a pair of Ohio Dominican errors led to a six-run third for KU as its lead ballooned to 10-0.
Collin Bishop (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) put an exclamation point on the win, homering in each of his last two at-bats and finishing 4-for-5 with five RBIs. The redshirt junior's sixth-inning two-run bomb was the first of his career, while his seventh-inning jack plated three. It marked the program's first four-hit game since Bishop himself was 4-for-4 against Mansfield, April 27, 2018, and first game of five RBIs or more since
Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) drove in six against East Stroudsburg, April 14, 2018.
Kutztown's (4-2) top of the lineup did the bulk of the damage, with 1-4 hitters
Mitch Pinder (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown),
Jake Augustus (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), Bishop and Moretski all enjoying multi-hit games. The quartet was a combined 10-for-16 with two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored. Bishop scored a game-high four runs. Pinder doubled twice and drove in three, and Augustus scored three times.
Greg Power (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was 2-for-4 with a run batted in, three runs scored and a stolen base for KU out of the eight hole.
All of the production came in support of freshman hurler
Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), who earned his first collegiate victory with five innings of six-hit, three-run ball. He fanned two. Classmate
Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) tossed a perfect sixth, striking out all three batters he faced, and
Aaron Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) worked the seventh.
The host Panthers (1-7) were outhit 14-8 and left nine on base. Starter Clay Davies took the loss after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on six hits in two innings. Three players wound up with two hits apiece and reserve first baseman Jake Daniel hit a seventh-inning solo home run in his lone plate appearance.
