KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) each had five goals, while
Hannah Brewster (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) added hat tricks as the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team enjoyed its highest-scoring game since 2010 in a 22-12 non-conference victory over Caldwell Wednesday afternoon at Keystone Field.
The game marked Kutztown's 2020 home opener and the team's first on its renovated home field. Keystone Field was redesigned and turf was put down prior to the start of the 2019-20 academic year.
After
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) opened the scoring 91 seconds in, the Golden Bears (1-1) fell behind 3-1 by the five minute mark. They would eventually find their footing and close the first half strong, scoring the last five goals --three on free-position attempts-- to lead 11-7.
Brewster, a freshman, scored two of her three goals in the opening half, including the first of her career. Lane finished off a pass from
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) with 2:15 left in the half for her second career hat trick.
Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) also had a multi-goal first half, depositing a pair of shots past Cougar (0-1) goalie Ashley Barrett.
Kutztown would close out the game with another 5-0 run on the strength on two Conteh goals and markers by Lane, Brewster and McCormick. The 22 goals by KU were its most in almost 10 years dating back to a 27-1 win over Erskine on March 20, 2010, and the second most since the program was rebooted in 2008.
Conteh and Lane led the Maroon and Gold's offensive efforts with five goals and an assist apiece. Cafferata registered five points on a goal and four assists. Watkins (three goals, assist) and Vaughan Ware (two goals, two assists) had four points each.
Kutztown outshot Caldwell 49-18 and held sizable advantages in ground balls (36-22) and draw controls (23-13).
Midfielders
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Watkins factored heavily into the Bears' two-way game. Fitzpatrick, a 2018 All-PSAC pick, had eight draw controls, seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. She also scored a beautiful diving goal just past the midway point of the first half. Watkins complemented her four-point afternoon with five draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Fitzpatrick's eight draw controls are tied for sixth most in a game in program history, while the Golden Bears' 21 caused turnovers were their most since 2009.
Barrett, a freshman making her first career start in goal for Caldwell, was tested early and often. She made a number of timely saves and finished with 17 overall. Kutztown freshman
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) made a pair of stops.
Arden Kassaleh, coming off a 94-goal, 110-point 2019 season, led all players with seven points on five goals and two assists for the visiting Cougars. Jenna Steelman tallied three goals and two assists, and Kelsey Maxwell had a pair of goals.
Kutztown will be back on its home field in less than 48 hours to host Jefferson on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
