Four in double-figures as KU men’s basketball takes care of Mansfield Wednesday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team saw most of its production on the offensive end of the court from four different players as KU won its second straight home game in defeating Mansfield University 77-63 Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division action inside Keystone Arena.

Freshman Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading), redshirt-junior Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara), and sophomores Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) and Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) combined to produce 92-percent of the scoring output for the Golden Bears (7-9 overall, 5-5 PSAC).

Butler led all scorers with 25 points, while Brake followed closely behind with 23 points. Generett finished with 13 points off the bench, and Mosby netted 10 points for KU. Mosby and Brake paced Kutztown in rebounding, finishing with nine and seven respectively, a season-high for Brake.

The Maroon and Gold shot 48.3-percent (28-of-58) from the floor, their highest since their victory against Slippery Rock on Dec. 20, when they shot 51.7-percent (30-for-58). KU also went 14-for-17 (82.4-percent) from the free-throw line, with six different players hitting at least one shot from the charity stripe.

Kutztown started the game shooting lights-out from the floor, Brake in particular, as the Coatesville native connected on his first three 3-pointers and four-of-five, to help stake KU to a double-digit lead (14-4) just 6:36 into the game. The Mounties (4-11, 3-7) pulled to within five points twice, the latest being 21-16 in favor of Kutztown with 9:17 left in the first half. KU finished that time frame on an 11-7 run to lead 32-23 at halftime.

The Golden Bears scored the first two baskets of the second half via jumpers by Brake and Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca), and they extended their advantage to as many as 16 points (45-29) with 12:49 left to play. But Mansfield would not go away, going on a 10-0 run the next 2:45 of action and found itself down 45-39 with 10:04 to go.

That would be the closest that the Mounties would get, however, for the remainder of the game. KU made a nine-point lead (61-52) into a 14-point advantage (67-53) after Butler, Mosby and Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line combined.

Arens and Bernstein finished with three points a piece for KU.

Kutztown travels to take on West Chester University in PSAC East play this Saturday, Jan. 18, for a 3 p.m. tip.
