Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by C.J. Hemerly, Assistant Sports Information Director

Cecere nets two as women’s soccer wins season-opener 3-0 at Charleston (WV)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Junior Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) doubled her career output in goals in just one half as she tallied two second-half goals to add on to a first-half strike by senior Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico), and the Kutztown University women's soccer team won its season-opener 3-0 at the University of Charleston (W.Va.) Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match.

It is the third consecutive year the Golden Bears (1-0 overall) have won their opener and the third time it was against the Golden Eagles.

Cecere found the back of the net twice during her freshman campaign, and in a span of 7:02, she matched that mark to pace the KU offensive attack. Zwiercan received a pass near the top of the 18-yard box from classmate Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic), took two dribbles and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the goal past a diving Charleston goalkeeper.

Zwiercan now stands alone, second all-time in program history with 80 career points.

Junior Rachel Rizzo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) assisted Cecere's first goal as she played a through-ball that cut through the defense onto the running path of Cecere. It is Rizzo's first career assist.

Senior goalie Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), the program's all-time leader in career wins and shutouts, added onto her total in both categories. Behind a starting backline of Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Kupiec, Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Molly McHarg (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford), Bracken finished with three saves.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Golden Bears 10-9, but only three of their shots were on frame, whereas KU recorded seven of its nine on goal. Kutztown also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Kutztown now has almost one week off to prepare for its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener at Millersville, next Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m.
