Golden Bears win three events in season-opening meet against Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Lindsay Brenneman (Dover, Pa./Dover) and Alison McLaughlin (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) won individual events and were part of Kutztown University's victorious 200-yard freestyle relay as the Golden Bears dropped their 2019-20 season opener against Shippensburg 132-112 on Thursday evening at the Keystone Pool.

The unusual mid-September start gave both teams a chance to tune up for the schedule ahead.

Brenneman, who scored points for KU in four individual events at the 2019 PSAC Championships, captured the 1000 free in 11:23.37, nearly 16 full seconds ahead of Shippensburg's Gracee Tothero in second.

In the very next event, the 200 free, McLaughlin led from start-to-finish. The junior from Hatfield held off the Raiders' Kayla Sudbrink with a winning time of 2:07.46. Sudbrink finished in 2:08.64.

Kutztown (0-1) closed the meet with an impressive showing in the 200 free relay, rallying to the win in 1:46.15. Brenneman pushed the Bears in front with a 25.83 50-yard split just past the halfway point of the race and senior Carley Wise (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) anchored with a 26.27 split to best Ship's (1-0) top relay by .69 seconds.

Earlier, Wise swam to second in the 50 free, putting down a time of 27.10. Brenneman (56.99) led teammates Emmarose DeCaro (Apex, N.C./Apex) (58.42) and McLaughlin (58.74) in a 2-3-4 for the Maroon and Gold in the 100 free.

Sophomore Charlotte Owens (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) also claimed a runner-up finish, with hers coming in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.62).

Shippensburg got two individual wins apiece from Madison Breiner, Bri Joll, Eva Tice and Tomomi Nakano. Breiner authored back-to-back victories in the 50 free (26.33) and 100 free (56.52), while Joll won the 100 fly (1:03.66) and 200 IM (2:21.65). Tice swept the 50 and 100 breast races in 34.71 and 1:14.68, respectively, and Nakano topped the 50 back (29.36) and 50 fly (28.74). The trio of Nakano, Tice and Breiner were joined by Mari Reott in the Raiders' meet-opening 200 medley relay win (1:57.39).

The Golden Bears are next scheduled to compete at the Millersville Relays on Saturday, Oct. 5.
