KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Goldey-Beacom, 3-2, and deliver head coach
John Gump his 600th career collegiate victory on Saturday night at Keystone Arena.
Gump, the ninth winningest active coach in NCAA Division II, improved to 600-426 during his 32-year career, which includes stops at DeSales (1988-95) and Lehigh (1996). The win was No. 389 for Gump at Kutztown, where he is in his 23rd season.
The milestone didn't come easy, however.
Kutztown out-killed Goldey-Beacom in every set, but too many unforced errors on the hosts part saddled them with a 2-0 hole to climb out of. The Lightning (3-5) won the opening set 25-20 and pulled away in the second for a 25-16 win.
Roles started to reverse in the third. KU (6-2) hit .216 with 14 kills on 37 tries, including six from
Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), while Goldey-Beacom struggled to an .091 hitting percentage and also committed four service errors.
Kutztown drew within a set, winning the third 25-17. Both teams would bring it offensively in the fourth, but again the Bears prevailed, 25-19. Owen had eight more kills on her way to tying a career-high with 22, while
Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) added five and
Britney Hewitt (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) four in the Maroon and Gold's best set of the night.
KU hit .486 with 19 kills and two errors on 35 attempts. The Lightning were no slouch, hitting .440 themselves with 12 kills and one error on 25 attempts. Lindsay Przywara accounted for a third of those.
Riding the wave of two straight set victories, Kutztown again had to recover when GBC scored the first four points of the deciding fifth set. It did, though, just in time.
The Bears scored six of the next seven points, taking their first lead of the set on a kill from Owens, which was assisted by
Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area). Goldey-Beacom drew within 13-12 before setter Autumn Spendlove was called for a carry.
Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College) clinched the win for KU with an ace on match point.
Hewitt and Patterson both had career nights offensively, finishing with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. James had 30 assists and 14 digs.
Libero
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led all players with 32 digs and recorded a pair of aces. Henderson had 17 digs and two aces, while
Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) contributed 22 assists.
Przywara had 20 kills and 12 digs to lead GBC. Teammate Shayla Boyce had 13 kills and 17 digs, and Neyshlian Roman Concepcion provided 27 digs.
The Golden Bears won three of four maches at this weekend's Kutztown Classic and will travel to Georgian Court next Friday, Sept. 20, for a tri-match with the host Lions and Le Moyne.
