KUTZTOWN, Pa. --
Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) and
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) of the Kutztown University baseball team both finished with three hits Sunday in a doubleheader with 25th-ranked Millersville as KU fell 7-4 and 7-2 in the two games at North Campus Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
Â
The Golden Bears (3-19 overall, 2-10 PSAC) once again played the nationally-ranked Marauders (24-7, 11-1) tough until the final pitch. They went down 6-1 in the opener and battled back to within three, but were unable to inch any further. In the night cap, KU was behind by just one run, 3-2, in the sixth, but saw four Millersville runs the next two innings, capped by a three-run seventh, help MU hold off KU.
Â
Rottet had all three hits in game one, tying a career-high for hits in a game. He also tied a career-high with three RBI and scored a run. He connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, his second of the season. Miller had two hits in game one and one in game two and also scored two runs.
Â
Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton),
Jeff Zebrowski (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and
Evan Musto (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) all finished the day with a hit each.
Â
Kutztown will remain at home as it takes on Lock Haven in a PSAC double header Friday, April 12, with game one set for 1 p.m.
Â
Millersville 7, Kutztown 4
Â
Millersville scored twice in its first at-bats of game one, but KU cut its early deficit in half in the bottom-half of the first via an RBI groundout by
Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood).
Â
The Marauders kept the theme of two-run innings going as they did the same in both the second and third innings to take a 6-1 lead in the third. But Rottet's two-run shot over the left field wall once again cut KU's deficit in half.
Â
The two teams traded runs in the fifth with the Maroon and Gold's run coming thanks to an RBI single up the middle by Rottet that allowed Zebrowski to come home. But that was the closest that Kutztown would get the remainder of the way.
Â
Millersville 7, Kutztown 2
Â
The Marauders once again opened up the game with two runs the first time they stepped to the plate, and then once again the Golden Bears answered.
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Villa to make the score 2-1.
Â
Millersville and Kutztown then each scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings respectively and the score was at 3-2 in favor of Millersville.
Â
Within striking distance, the nationally-ranked Marauders stepped up and scored four unanswered, including three in the seventh to hold on for the two-game sweep.
